MLC School, Burwood – Hockey & Multisport Field

Synthetic Hockey/Multisport Pitch Upgrade

Originally built as a training field for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the Synthetic Hockey field and Multisport Pitch at MLC School in Burwood required a major upgrade.

Synthetic Sports Group was proud to be selected for this project. Our professional tender submission and comprehensive, turnkey solutions secured the contract. The school’s decision was also influenced by our commitment to using only Australian-made products and green solutions.

Scope of Works

Turf Removal: The existing sand-filled synthetic turf and rubber underlay were removed and disposed of. However, our team was able to repurpose these materials by relocating them to a skirmish centre, preventing them from going to landfill.

Concrete Cleaning: The underlying concrete slab was thoroughly cleaned to prepare for the installation of new materials.

Shockpad Installation: A 10mm thick elastic rubber shockpad was installed, using approximately 11,600 recycled truck tyres. This eco-friendly approach allowed for the repurposing of materials that would otherwise have gone to landfill.

Surface Installation: The 100% Australian-made Poligras H2oz Hockey/Multisport surface was installed, complete with permanent line marking for the hockey field, 9 tennis courts, 3 netball courts, and 3 basketball courts. Poligras, recently used in the Tokyo Olympics, has been praised for its green technology.

Sand Infill & Final Grooming: 90 tonnes of kiln-dried sand, sourced from Williamstown, were spread mechanically to provide stability and enhance performance. The pitch was then groomed and prepared for play.

Challenges

The pitch sits atop a post-tensioned slab with strict weight limitations. Our team at Synthetic Sports Group devised innovative solutions to keep the project on time and within budget while adhering to these restrictions. Additionally, the permanent line marking for multiple sports required careful planning, particularly with the taping system.

Outcome

The administrators at MLC were highly impressed with Synthetic Sports Group’s management and execution of the project. The school is thrilled with their upgraded multisport courts and very pleased with the final outcome.
